This program , while not on Pine Ridge reservation but part of the Rosebud Sioux tribe, was in need of layette items for moms who are high risk . The program receives referrals from many places – WIC, nurses, doctors, clinic, schools, social workers. The moms who are in this program many be a young teen, have diabetes, hypertension, an unstable home life, have few resources etc. The moms are followed by the nurses at their home as soon as they are identified as high risk. The nurse sees the moms monthly during the pregnancy and more frequently during the final weeks., checking their blood pressure etc and making sure they are signed up for programs that will help them like WIC. Also they are given education re the pregnancy. Since Rosebud does not have an obstetrics-gynecology unit, moms are seen at clinics that have a delivery area or are flown to Sioux Falls SD if an emergency arises. Moms and their babies are followed until the child turns 2 years of age, when they are transferred to another organization There are about 30 children in the program yearly, with 10-15 deliveries per year.
Needs List for the Program
Layettes to be given to the mom before delivery. Seasonal items can be given and nurse who make up the layettes will add the appropriate items for the season. They have storage. Since they follow kids until they are 24 months, clothing items can be sent up to size 3/4
- sleepers, sleep sacks
- receiving blankets, quilts, afghans, fleece blankets, cotton blankets
- toiletries baby wash, baby shampoo, Q-tips, butt cream,
- thermometers, nail clippers
- sweaters, socks or booties, hats, shoes for older children
- towels, washcloths, crib or Pack and Play sheets
- diaper bag, diaper wipes bibs burp cloths
- cloth and disposable diapers, 3/4 size disposable needed mainly
- warm snowsuit
