Martin Diaper Bag Program

Many new mothers on the Rez bring their babies home without the basic items a newborn needs.  Some don’t have enough money to buy what they need, others lack the transportation needed to travel many miles to a store and some, especially in the case of teens giving birth, don’t know what a baby needs.  The Diaper Bag Program provides the essentials  needed to care for newborns and are given to new mothers within the first 2 weeks postpartum during a home visit by local public health nurse.  These visits allow the nurse the opportunity to see women and their new babies in the home environment and gives her the chance to help with any issues they may have.  This also establishes a contact at the clinic should they have any future problems.  The diaper bags are assembled on the Rez from donations sent in by our volunteers.

  1. Hi, Our church has a big box of diaper bags. They have just been lying around, and when I found this program, I instantly thought of them. I don’t have the budget to fill them with the requested items, but I was wondering if you would take the diaper bags all by themselves. I haven’t counted, but there are quite a few. Thanks, Jenni of Midland, SD

    • Yes we definitely will take the bags .They can be sent as long as they do not have advertising for formula from the drug companies. That’s because of the breastfeeding initiative. And we do not expect you to fill them.We as a group can send items that Debbie can use to fill the bags. There are actually 2 places to send the bags Rosebud and Wanblee but it is cheaper to send to one place. Let us know how many are sent and to where Jennifer so we can keep count but also can work on other things if that need is met for the time being. Check the link below for the address and thanks so much for thinking about our program and our babies. Its appreciated!
