The infant and toddler program provides items to new moms , to the Bright Start nurses who visit the moms on the entire Rez thru the first 3 years of a babies life and to nursing staff who see moms or kids in the new community clinic in Martin that serves Native Americans, and identify needs. Items, stored in the garage of the Sacred Shawl Society, are organized by age and season. Older age groups who need assistance can visit the Wild Horse Butte CDC and receive items that are again stored in the Sacred Shawl storage area.
Many new mothers on the Rez bring their babies home without the basic items a newborn needs. Some don’t have enough money to buy what they need, others lack the transportation needed to travel many miles to a store and some, especially in the case of teens giving birth, don’t know what a baby needs. he Diaper Bag Program provides the essentials needed to care for newborns and are given to new mothers within the first 2 weeks postpartum during a home visit by local public health nurses. These visits allow the nurse the opportunity to see women and their new babies in the home environment and gives her the chance to help with any issues they may have. This also establishes a contact at the clinic should they have any future problems. The diaper bags are assembled on the Rez from donations sent in by our volunteers.

The Breastfeeding Program is overseen by the Wanblee/Martin public Health nurse . Currently only 25% of women on the Rez breastfeed. Because of this low number and the tremendous benefits for women and their babies, reservations have accepted thebreastfeeding initiative set forth by First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Not all women are able to breastfeed, but for those who can breastfeeding is offered as the first option. This program provides lactation education and counseling to women every 3 months during their pregnancy so they are ready to start right after delivery. The program also provides items that aid women in breastfeeding and are given to them at the 2 week postpartum home visit. Any problems women may have with breastfeeding are addressed at this time and the nurse will be their future contact person if additional assistance is needed.
