Wanblee Update for June

I touched base with Jerome High Horse the other day to get the latest news from Wanblee. He’s recovering nicely from knee surgery but not fast enough for him, he has lots to do but can’t be on his leg very long at a time.

Troy from Hearts of the Sacred Spirit sent money to buy fencing, seeds, tools and a tiller for the first community garden located behind the High Horse compound. We’re happy to report the garden is planted and doing well. They have another location spotted for an additional garden but the land is owned by the tribe and they need their permission to proceed, waiting for the tribe is always an issue. Jerome knows some ranchers that can provide manure for the garden if they get the go ahead in time for this year. If you have any garden seeds they would love to have them. Chickens are also in the plan and Jerome has been collecting pallets to build the coops. If any of you have experience in raising chickens please share your knowledge of breeds, etc with Jerome. In addition to egg laying and meat production, chickens are great soil conditioners with their manure, scratching and insect eating, they can let the chickens loose on a new plot to help get it in shape for planting.

The children are now out of school and will receive a free lunch and breakfast there until the end of June if they register and have the transportation to get there. They have no idea if the meals will continue after that as the sequester has affected some of their resources. Jerome tries to get to the food bank in Rapid City when he can but they require you to pre-order online 3 days before pickup. Many times they’re out of things he’s ordered and instead have food items that are full of sugar. He wants to avoid this because of the high rates of diabetes on the rez. The food isn’t free, it costs 18 cents a pound with funds provided by Worldwide Hunger Relief which is certainly a good deal if they have any good food to buy.

Community gardens are needed more than ever so people can help feed themselves as well as learn skills to be self sufficient.

The High Horses and some other community members would like to host a 4th of July celebration for kids and their families and they’re hoping SFK can help. There’s a makeshift park a few miles from town where they would like to have a cookout, play games and have a fireworks display (handled by the fire department) in the evening if they can get the funds to buy them. Judging from past events they expect to entertain and feed about 500 people.  They estimate they will need about $500 for the food and $500 for the fireworks display.

Below is a list of needs for the games with links from Amazon for those of you online shoppers. We have no affiliation with Amazon but do like their prices and free shipping over $25.  Used items in good condition are certainly welcome so check your garages, yard sales and thrift shops for these or any other outdoor activities and games for kids.

For the food they hope to get enough donations to serve 250 hot dogs, 300 hamburgers, chips beans and drinks, for dessert they’re hoping for watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew which is a real treat for many folks on the Rez.   They will also need 12 picnic tablecloths, plastic cutlery, paper plates, cups and napkins.

Dollar General has free shipping and a $5 coupon now on orders of $25 and over.  Here are a couple of links for paper plates, napkins, etc.

These community events are so important on the rez as it helps bring people together working on a project their entire family can enjoy and builds confidence when they’re part of successful projects. There aren’t a lot of opportunities to have fun on the Rez. SFK wants to do what we can to ensure their celebration is a success, giving people an enjoyable day where they can forget about the day to day stresses caused by living in poverty.

Hearts of the Sacred Spirit and Worldwide Hunger Relief will help with some of the party items but of course they can only do so if they receive monetary donations from people like you. Any amount is appreciated and is a charitable tax deductible donation as both are 501c3 non profits. If you prefer to purchase your items or send a Walmart card, please ship them here to the High Horses. Please let us know if you can help.

So that is the latest. I have one request. If you send items directly to the High Horses, please enclose your email or home address so they can send you a thank you note.

I will try to blog more since the house is now on the market. When I move, there will be down time as I travel across the country to my new home. Thanks from Sew For Kids.
