Have you ever noticed how quickly time flies? I can’t believe September is over, where did the time go? October is already turning out to be a busy month here at Sew For Kids. The first exciting event, if you haven’t already heard, is that Kristy Smith owner of the Hopeful Threads blog has chosen us as her project to support for the month of October. Not only is she asking her many followers to help make layette and nursing items for both Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations, but she has also recruited people to donate items for giveaways (a Native American tradition). Feel free to participate in the giveaways. Kristy invites all of you to join with them and help Lakota moms and their babies this month. A big thanks from all of us here to Kristy, her donors and her team for taking the time to sew for them.
Kristy has a big heart and lots of energy despite having 5 children to take care of. This is evident when you visit her site and see all the projects she has supported in the past and also the overwhelming success she’s had in convincing others to join with her. She encourages her volunteers to help in other countries and to also look for needs in their own communities. There’s a tremendous amount of time and work that goes into planning these monthly events and to keep the momentum going, Kristy pulls it off time and time again with the help of her very generous volunteers.
Kristy will be posting daily on Facebook, for those of you who are FB fans, check out her posts. For those of you who are not FB users, information will be posted on our yahoo group about patterns, giveaways, etc. A Pinterest site has been set up with photos and links for patterns to make, most of them being free. You can also check out our pattern page . Thanks to all those generous bloggers and crafters out there that make their patterns available to us. Kristy has also set up a Flickr group for the project so you can post pics of your creations. If you don’t have a Flickr account send your photo to Kristy and she will post for you. We’re so excited to be working together as a team this month with Hopeful Threads and know we’re going to be able to help a lot of Rez moms and their children. Be sure to check out Kristy’s other projects throughout the year and help her when you can.
We’re also continuing the “warm” theme from last month working on winter items for both reservations but for October the main focus is on outerwear. If you’re still working on pj’s, quilts, etc. from September please continue, these will all be needed until next spring. This is the time for all you knitters and crocheters out there to shine, scarves, hats, mittens, slippers, socks, afghans, sweaters, etc. are all needed. For those of you who want to contribute but don’t sew or craft, go shopping for new or gently used clothing at garage sales, thrift stores or your kid’s closet. Believe it or not there are lots of children on the rez that don’t have a warm coat or a pair of boots so especially keep a look out for these things on your shopping trips.
We cannot and do not expect you to help with every project we post about but we do like to offer a variety of ways you can help, after all variety is the spice of life! Help us when you can and thanks from SFK.
